There are 4 classes of drugs used to treat GERD or reflex disease. One class, which is called antacids is available over the counter. The drugs in this category include Maalox, Mylanta, Amphogel, Tums etc. The second class is called H2 blockers. The drugs in this category include Tagamet, Zantac, Pepcid and Axid. The third category is called a PPI which is short for proton pump inhibitor. The drugs in this category include Prilosec (Omeprazole), Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix and Nexium. All of these drugs can also be used to treat ulcers. The fourth class of drugs used to treat GERD are prokinetic agents. These drugs change the motility or movement of the GI tract. One drug which was particularly helpful was called Propulsid or Cisapride but it was taken off the market due to cardiac side effects. |

Maalox, Mylanta or any other antacids that contain Magnesium causes Diarrhea. |

Amphogel or any other antacids that contain aluminium causes constipation. So, if it is better to use alternating maalox and amphogel so that you dont have the diarrhea / constipation side effects. |

All of the H2 blockers are now available over the counter. They work well but are not as effective as the Proton pump inhibitors. Generally, they are well tolerated and have minimal side effects. |
