COLONOSCOPY INSTRUCTIONS

 

Medications: Attached is a prescription for Halflytely Bowel Prep Kit with Bisacodyl (Dulcolax) tablets, take this prescription to you local pharmacy to be filled.

 

The Day Before the Colonoscopy:

You must be on a clear liquid diet the entire day. This includes water, clear fruit juices, jello, and soup broth. On the back of this paper we provided you a sample menu.

 

In the morning, you must mix the Halflytely solution.

1. Add lukewarm drinking water to the top of the line on the bottle, plus flavor pack.

2. Place the cap on the bottle and shake well to dissolve the powder.

3. Do not add anything else to the solution.

4. Refrigerate the solution.

At 4:00 PM

1. Take 4 Bisacodyl (Dulcolax) tablets with a large glass of water. Do not crush or chew the

    tablets. Do not take the tablets within one hour of taking an antacid.

At 7:00 PM

2. Drink ALL of the Halflytely solution as follows:

·        You must drink one 8-ounce glass every 20-30 minutes

·        It is best to drink each glass quickly, sometimes using a straw helps.

·        If you feel yourself starting to get nauseated stop and wait for it to pass and then continue drinking.

·        You must finish the entire solution. It will be a total of about 8 glasses.

·        Remember nothing to drink or eat after Midnight.

The Day of the Colonoscopy:

·        Take your morning medications with as little water as possible.

·        DO NOTtake your diabetic medication unless told to do so. Please check your blood sugar before coming in for your procedure. (Diabetic patients only)

·        DO NOT stop taking your blood thinner medication unless instructed to by Dr. Dave or the prescribing physician.

·        Please be on time for your appointment.

·        Leave all jewelry at home; bring insurance card and a picture ID.

·        There must be someone available to drive you home following your procedures, because you will not be permitted to leave the facility on your own.

·        Plan to be at the endoscopy center or surgery center for a total of  2- 3 hours.

·        Your follow up appointment should be at the bottom of your envelope.

·        Your results will be given to you at your follow up appointment.

·        Any questions please call the office or surgery center we will be glad to answer any questions you might have.

NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION CAN BE USED TO TAKE A PATIENT HOME UNLESS THEY ARE ACCOMPANIED BY A FAMILY MEMBER OR FRIEND.

Please read through all of your paperwork.

 

If you are unable to keep the date or time of your procedure please give the office a call and we will be happy to reschedule or adjust your time if space is available.

 

You must call at least 24-48 hours ahead to cancel your appointment or as soon as possible. There will be a $25.00 charge for no show appointments.

 

If you require an authorization for your procedure Dr. Dave's office will contact your insurance company for that information.

 

The surgery center or endoscopy unit will call you the day before or 2 days prior to your appointment to give you a report time and to go over some paperwork.

 

If you take Coumadin, Plavix or Aspirin do not stop taking these medications unless instructed by your prescribing physician or Dr. Dave. Please have a PT/INR (Coumadin patients only)  done no later than 7 days prior to your appointment, bring the results with you or have the lab fax it to Dr. Dave’s office and to the facility that is during your procedure.

 

If biopsies were taken during your procedures, Dr. Dave will have the result at your follow-up appointment.

 

You MUST have someone available to take you home after your procedure.

 

Please call the office or the surgery center if you have any questions about your instructions.
